He thought he had got it when they discovered he was bursting with magic. Special training, they said. Place in the Special Tactics And Reconnaissance unit, dealing with the dreaded shadowrunners, they said. In the first few months, he had mixed feelings - he had to study stuff like threat assessment, procedures, languages, low profile target monitoring, run endless laps and they didn't even let him touch anything but the smallest guns. On the plus side, they'd let him play all day with those, and he wasn't shy about it - in fact he wasn't shy about anything, because he learned magic strong like his was so rare, that he could get and get away with almost anything. He got booze, women, drugs, even btl chips, but that he learned to stay away form those fraggin' piles of drek on the third day he could stop vomiting. They told him he almost died from that one chip, because his nervous system was somehow translating the signals wrong. Something connected to his magic or what the frag, but he didn't care. Good riddance.
Maybe that was the first time he began wandering about life outside the gates, doing something unrestricted, unobserved, maybe even something meaningful. He was young, too young, and he realized he's becoming something like his parents - a glorified security guard. But change is coming to his life, even if he didn't know about it yet...
